URBAN WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT

Some species are specialists at adapting to life in urban ecosystems, exploiting human-made food sources and habitats to fulfill their life requisites. As urbanization continues, and natural habitats diminish, more birds are forced to find opportunities living among people and often come into conflict.

Working with raptors, dogs and other conventional techniques, our expert team is highly skilled at providing urban programs that are safe, effective, quiet, and respectful of the neighbours. Our team has considerable experience managing geese and gulls in urban settings but also have had success with pigeons, starlings, and various other species. If you think our services may be the solution to your unique urban wildlife issue, please contact us for a comprehensive assessment.

Rooftop Gull Management

The rooftops of coastal cities provide ideal habitat for gulls: elevated, away from predators and close to human-created and natural foraging habitats. Rooftop gull activity can lead to messy, unhygienic conditions and negative human-wildlife interactions, especially during breeding seasons, where the presence of young can cause parents to become protective and aggressive.

Since 2018, The Raptors have been implementing safe, effective, and public conscious rooftop programs in the Vancouver and Victoria Metro Areas. Our team has all the necessary skills and safety training to preform comprehensive management on rooftops, deterring gulls from loafing and nesting on through raptor-focused management strategies.

In addition to rooftop programs, we have provided gull abatement management in public, urban areas, like markets and restaurants, where the abundance of food can cause aggressive gulls to attack visitors and steal their food.

Canada Goose Management

In the past thirty years, North American populations of Canada Geese have more than doubled. This dramatic increase combined with steady urbanization has pushed Canada Geese to explore new, non-traditional nesting locations, like the roofs of multi-story buildings. Geese have strong fidelity for nesting locations, and success at a site may encourage them and their young to come back to that location year after year. Breeding geese can be especially aggressive, attacking people who inadvertently come too close to their nests or young.

Using a combination of falconry, trained dogs and other techniques, The Raptors have implemented many successful goose programs involving nest management and active abatement. Consistent management efforts are highly effective in encouraging geese to choose other, more ideal locations to spend their time.
